What is it?
Genetic IVF represents the combination of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) with pre-implantation genetic testing that identifies chromosomal irregularities in embryos, known as aneuploidies (PGT-A).
Aneuploidies of the egg and later of the embryo are very common and increase with the woman’s age. They are responsible for the decrease in pregnancy rates with age, many implantation failures and most miscarriages.
PGT-A is used to select chromosomally normal embryos, improving pregnancy rates and reducing implantation failure and miscarriage. As a result, the probability of a live birth increases and the time needed to achieve it is reduced.
This technique is now considered to be an almost routine complementary procedure to IVF/ICSI treatments to increase their efficacy.

What does the process involve?
First visit:
An ultrasound study is performed in the first few days after menstruation.
Ovarian stimulation:
Sufficient subcutaneous hormone doses are administered to achieve the development of an ideal number of follicles/eggs. This requires regular ultrasound and/or laboratory tests.
Induction of oocyte maturation:
Once adequate follicular development has been observed, a final medication is administered that causes the oocytes to mature.
Follicular puncture and oocyte extraction:
This consists of the puncture and aspiration of the follicles via the vagina to extract the eggs. It is performed in our own clinic under completely aseptic conditions, with ultrasound monitoring and under sedation, so that it is completely painless.
Sperm capacitation:
The man collects a sample of semen which is activated using a simple capacitation technique to select the best motile spermatozoa.
Fertilisation:
After extracting all the oocytes, the mature ones are selected and prepared in the laboratory and then fertilised, either by means of conventional IVF or ICSI, with the semen of the partner or a donor.
Embryo culture and development:
24 hours after fertilisation, a check is made to see how many eggs have been fertilised (zygotes), and they are kept in culture in an EmbryoScope Plus® incubator that creates the ideal conditions for embryo development without the need to remove them thanks to the Time-Lapse control system (taking a photo of each embryo every few minutes).
Embryo biopsy, genetic study and embryo vitrification:
On reaching the blastocyst stage, all embryos of sufficient quality are biopsied. The embryos are then vitrified (frozen) until the results of the genetic study are obtained.
Frozen embryo transfer
Once the results of the genetic study are known, if there are healthy embryos, the transfer of one of them to the mother’s uterus is scheduled.

How effective is it?
The PGT-A technique allows chromosomally healthy embryos to be selected, eliminating the negative effect linked to age. With an euploid embryo, at Vida pregnancy rates of 65–70% per transfer are achieved.
The problem with PGT-A is that if very few oocytes are obtained or the woman is particularly advanced in years, it is possible that all the embryos will be abnormal (aneuploid) and therefore not transferable.
In these cases, it will be necessary to assess on a case-by-case basis whether it is advisable to try the treatment again or to opt for other reproduction techniques such as oocyte reception/egg donation.
